Midway through the season, the 2012 Wildcats softball team has already equaled its softball victory total for all of last season in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. And the Wildcats (13-27 overall, 8-17 in the SWAC) still have 20 games to play.
In a recent bye week, Coach Leah Wentworth said, “We focused on what we are doing,” and built team chemistry through off-the-field activities. "It was a good time for us to regroup as a team, get on the same page, and come up with a strategy to approach the second half of the season.
"When we've fallen short, it's been one component of our game that hasn't been there," Wentworth said. "If we bring our hitting, pitching and fielding, we have a chance of winning every game we play."
The Wildcats will play three of its next four series at home, and Wentworth said her team's focus needs to be better in home games.
"It's a matter of not allowing the crowd to become a distraction," she said. "On the road, we don't have the pressure of family and friends in the stands." Wentworth expects her club to make additional improvements in the season's second half and win more tight games.
"I think we've grown a lot, and we are still looking to continue to improve on that," she said. "We've fallen short in a handful of games where I felt we should have come out on top."
