Games Continue Saturday at Edmonds Fields
The Western Nevada College Wildcats softball team took to Edmonds Field Friday for a doubleheader against the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern Community College. The Wildcats entered the series seven games ahead of the Spartans. and won the first game 5-0 and the second, 8-0.
Starting pitcher Jordan Garcia earned the win for the Wildcats in the opener. In the first inning, Garcia walked the first batter, to put a runner on the bases. A single by CNCC’s Whitney Titus presented a potential scoring run, which Wildcat centerfielder Jennifer Quam silenced with a throw to catcher Katirina Rand to get the out at home.
In WNC’s first at bat, Quam singled and promptly stole second base. Ali Lostra doubled to score Quam, and a single by Niki DiSera scored Lostra. The Wildcats closed the inning in the lead, 2-0.
In the second inning, Tori Crowell singled, but was left stranded. Western’s Alexia Alley came in to relieve Garcia in the third inning, and got some help from her defense to prevent CNCC from scoring.
In the bottom of the third, Melanie Pfeiffer reached on a bunt, Lostra singled and both advanced on a passed ball. Pfeiffer scored on a sacrifice by DiSera. The score at the end of the inning was 3-0, Wildcats. In the fourth, Crowell singled, Quam reached on an error and Pfeiffer walked to load the bases. A pop out by Taleas Marble left the runners stranded.
WNC’s Lostra relieved Alley in the fifth inning. After a scoreless fifth, Alley led off the sixth with a single and advanced on a passed ball. Thomas singled and promptly stole second. A sacrifice by Crowell scored Alley. Thomas scored on a passed ball, and Quam bunted to get on. She was ruled out at second for leaving the base early. Pfeiffer reached on error; she was ruled out, sliding to into home on a hit by Marble.
At the end of six, WNC led 5-0.
In the final inning, Alley returned to the circle. After a hit by CNCC’s Andria Walker, Alley struck out the next batter, and the inning came to close with a double play by the WNC defense.
In the second game, Garcia returned to the circle for Western. Marble doubled in the bottom of the first, but was left stranded.
In the bottom of the second, the Wildcats took advantage of Spartan errors, tallying four unearned runs. With two outs against them, DiSera singled, Garcia reached on an error and Thomas singled. Crowell reached by fielder’s choice, which scored DiSera. A triple by Quam scored Garcia and Crowell, and a double by Pfeiffer scored Quam. The score after two innings, was 4-0, Wildcats.
In the fourth, WNC pitcher Garcia was relieved by Alley, who with the help of a solid WNC defense, kept CNCC scoreless.
At the bottom of the fourth, Thomas singled and Crowell walked. The runners advanced on a passed ball, but were left stranded.
Marble led off in the fifth, with a solo home run. Lostra reached second on an error and scored on a single by DiSera. Rand singled and DiSera scored on a bunt by Thomas. Two fielder’s choice plays put Crowell and Quam on base, and a single by Pfieffer scored Thomas to end the game in favor of the Wildcats. Pitcher Garcia got the win.
Coach Leah Wentworth said, "They brought an all-around solid effort, and defensively made some good plays. They carried the intensity from start to finish. We’ll be looking to finish the series with that same intensity."
The Wildcats and the Spartans square off for another doubleheader, Saturday, April 7, at noon and 2 p.m. Games are played at Edmonds Sports Complex, 1555 Livermore Lane, Carson City.
