Chance to Watch NJCAA Standouts
The Western Nevada College Wildcats softball team will celebrate its annual “Stack the Stands” day on Friday, April 27, to open the final home series of the season.
Wildcat promotional items will be given away to fans coming out to cheer the team against cross-state rival College of Southern Nevada at Edmonds Sports Complex, 1555 Livermore Lane, in Carson City. Doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday and noon Saturday, April 28.
WNC Coach Leah Wentworth said her team “has a lot of energy” as it prepares for the final weekends of the regular season. “We’ve come so far, and we have a lot of momentum going now,” she said.
Besides showing support for the Wildcats, the final home series is an opportunity to pay tribute to the team’s sophomores and raise money for cancer research. WNC sophomores will be honored between games of the Saturday twin bill and a "Strike Out Cancer" fundraiser is planned. Bakery items, bracelets and balloons can be purchased as part of the fundraiser to fight Multiple Myeloma.
"It is going to be a big weekend for all of us," said WNC Interim Coach Rosie Contri.
WNC’s sophomore class includes Megan Hein, Lyzette Aguilar, Niki DiSera, Ashley Gleason, Taleas Marble, Melanie Pfeiffer, Mikaela Henshaw, Emily Nagel, Trinity Thom and Jordan Thomas.
The series also gives fans an opportunity to watch two WNC players ranked among the National Junior College Athletic Association statistical leaders. The NJCAA ranked Wildcat freshman outfielder Jennifer Quam seventh in stolen bases as of April 24. Quam’s five stolen bases in a four-game series with College of Southern Nevada on April 20-21 were excluded from her total, and she now has a school record 49 for the season.
In addition, Marble is among the top-20 home run leaders, according to the NJCAA. Marble has hit a school record 16 homers for the season, good for 11th in the nation.
WNC is in fourth place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball standings. The Wildcats (15-22 in SWAC and 20-31 overall) will play its final series at College of Southern Idaho on May 4-5 to conclude the regular season. The Wildcats’ final eight games will determine their seeding for the regional tournament May 10-13.
