WNC Pitcher Baker Leads Nation in Multiple Categories
Western Nevada College is ranked 19th in the National Junior College Athletic Association baseball poll released on Wednesday. The Wildcats (36-11), winners of seven of their past eight games, slipped a spot from previous poll released on April 11.
Salt Lake Community College (34-6), which leads the Wildcats by a game in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings, moved up to fifth in the nation.
Once-beaten Iowa Western Community College remained atop the NJCAA poll.
Meanwhile, in the Perfect Game top-50 poll, the Wildcats maintained their No. 18 ranking from two weeks earlier. Orange Coast College, Calif., (29-4) tops the poll.
WNC sophomore pitcher Dylan Baker leads a couple of NJCAA statistical categories. Baker’s 10-0 record is the nation’s best; Polk State College’s Alec Asher has also earned 10 wins but has suffered one defeat. The right-hander from Juneau, Alaska, also is leading the country in strikeouts per inning. Baker has struck out 85 batters and is averaging 1.594 per inning.
Based on a minimum of 30 innings pitched, Baker’s 0.506 earned run average over 53-1/3 innings is second to Middle Georgia College’s J.B. Wendelken, who has a 0.241 ERA in 37 1/3 innings. Baker also is among the national leaders with three earned runs and 21 hits allowed in his 12 Wildcat appearances on the mound.
More than once, WNC Coach D.J. Whittemore has referred to Baker’s season as one of the most remarkable he has seen as a coach.
WNC sophomore Derrick Pitts of Salt Lake City is 20th in home runs with nine.
