The Western Nevada College baseball team falls to the loser bracket in the Region 18 Tournament after a loss against the College of Southern Idaho. After a shaky start, and a nail-biting match-up, the Wildcats were unable to edge out CSI, losing their first tournament game 7-8. WNC will play Friday, May 11 at 2:30 p.m. PST. They will face the winner of a match-up between Colorado Northwestern Community College and the College of Southern Nevada.
CSI jumped out to an early 0-3 lead over WNC, scoring in the first and third innings. The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the third when Rayne Raven knocked the single and Chris Woolley hit a two-run homer to score Raven, making the score 3-2, CSI.
Defensive errors padded CSI’s lead in the fourth, bringing the score to 4-3. Southern Idaho allowed nothing from WNC in the bottom of the fourth, and the Wildcats returned the favor in the top of the fifth.
Raven earned another single in the bottom of the fifth, and Neil Lawhorn got on base with a walk. Woolley stepped in for his second at bat and knocked a two-run double to help WNC knot up the score at 4-4. Taylor Smart got the job done with a sacrifice bunt to advance Woolley to third base, and an RBI single by Zach Hendrix put WNC into the lead, 5-4. Mike Umscheid got on the board with a single. The inning ended with two runners stranded.
WNC silenced CSI in the top of the sixth, and Dillon Ness led off the bottom of the inning with a single. He stole second and scored when Raven reached on an error. At the end of six, WNC 6, CSI 4.
In the seventh, CSI hit one out of the park, tightening the score to 6-5, Wildcats. In the bottom of the inning, Cole Ferguson came in to pinch hit for Umscheid and grabbed a single. Pinch runner Bobby Gazzola was caught stealing second base to end the inning.
In the eighth, the Wildcats kept CSI scoreless, and Ness led off the bottom of the inning with a double. Ness successfully stole third, and crossed home when Woolley reached on an error. The score, WNC 7, CSI 5.
In the ninth, Anthony Consiglio came in to relieve pitcher Andrew Woeck. He allowed three runs on three hits before retiring the side. WNC entered the bottom of the ninth down one run (7-8), and couldn’t recover.
Wildcat Andrew Woeck pitched eight innings. He struck out six, walked two and allowed five runs on eight hits. Consiglio took the loss for WNC.
