WNC Defeats Salt Lake
After weather delayed tournament play in West Jordan, Utah, the Western Nevada College Wildcats eventually came to face their Scenic West Athletic Conference rivals on Friday afternoon. The Salt Lake Community College Bruins swiped the Region 18 Championship last week, but WNC fought every inning to defeat SLCC, 3-2, securing a spot in the Western District Championship game.
The Wildcats drew the visiting team spot, and were held off by the Bruins in the first inning. Brandon Jackson, who traditionally pitches relief for WNC started on the mound for Western and returned the favor.
Zach Hendrix led off the second inning with a base hit, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dillon Ness. Rayne Raven reached on an infield single, but the runners were left stranded on a double play by SLCC. Scoreless third and forth innings left the game knotted at 0-0.
In the fifth, Bobbie Pappin singled, and stole second, but was left stranded. WNC allowed nothing from SLCC to head to the sixth tied at zero.
WNC got on the board in the sixth when Chris Woolley knocked a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mike Umscheid advanced Woolley to third with a sacrifice, and Derrick Pitts hit an RBI single to score Woolley. Hendrix reached on an error, moving Pitts to second, but Pitts was then thrown out on a double play to end the inning. Jackson allowed nothing of the Bruins to make the score after six, 1-0, Wildcats.
The Bruins made quick work of the Wildcats in the top of the seventh, and put the pressure on, getting two runners on base before WNC’s defense retired the side.
In the eighth, Woolley and pinch hitter Cole Ferguson singled and then advanced on a wild pitch. Hendrix scored the two runners with a two-RBI single. WNC took the lead 3-0.
The Bruins got a single, and drew a walk to put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth. Dylan Baker then came in to relieve Jackson. The Bruins got on the board on a wild pitch, and a single scored another runner before WNC could end the inning. At the end of eight innings, 3-2, WNC.
In the final inning, WNC was unable to pad their lead, sending Baker back to work on the mound. He walked the first batter, who advanced on a sacrifice bunt, but WNC held on to win the game, 3-2.
Jackson got the win, pitching seven innings, striking out five, and allowing no runs on six hits. Baker earned the save.
The Wildcats now advance to the Western District Championship game from the winners bracket and will face either Lamar Community College or Salt Lake Community College, Saturday, May 19, at 11 a.m. PST.
