Largest Ever WNC Class Graduates

Ruby Kennison-Fox

For the third consecutive year, the largest class in Western Nevada College history has graduated and now enters into the Nevada workforce or continues their educational pursuits at four-year colleges or universities. The class of 2012 is 467 students strong, with a total of 511 degrees issued. Five students received Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and 10 students graduated with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College.

Receiving honorary degrees were Donal Hummer, Jr. and Senator Michael McGinness.

Hummer has been a member of the WNC Foundation Board since 1998 and served as its chairman from July 2009-June 2011. He spearheaded the committee to build the Ramsdell Playground at WNC’s Child Development Center, helped secure corporate donations to benefit WNC scholarships, and purchased the planet Neptune monument on the Planetary Walkway to benefit the Jack C. Davis Observatory. Hummer supported WNC as a non-paid lobbyist during the 2011 legislative session, and has written numerous articles in support of education, economic development and the workforce.

Michael McGinness has represented central Nevada in the State Legislature for the past 22 years. During his many years of service, Senator McGinness has been a supporter of the Nevada System of Higher Education, and particularly WNC, including partnering with Governor Sandoval and other legislators to find solutions to the funding crisis of 2011. McGinness is a Fallon resident and manager of KVLV Radio.
