College Replaces Key Vacancies

New Faculty and Staff Get to Work

As the new fall term begins, the college welcomes several academic faculty members who have joined WNC in 2012 to fill crucial vacancies. Dr. Robert Whitcomb is the most recent, arriving in time to teach business courses this fall. He hails from Haines, Alaska, where he retired as director of Human Resources and Organizational Development for the Chilkoot Indian Association, a Native Sovereign Nation there.

“I had worked at colleges and universities throughout the U.S. for more than 20 years and found I really missed the opportunity to work with students and communities,” Whitcomb said. “I saw WNC as a great opportunity to help rebuild our leadership bench.” He has held faculty and administrative positions in Wisconsin and Maine, including serving as dean of the graduate school at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.

Several other full-time faculty members joined the college during the spring 2012 term, but were officially welcomed last week. They include Dr. Haytham Mahmoud, who oversees and teaches upper division courses for the Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management program. In Automotive Mechanics, Jason Spohr became the new instructor this spring, bringing extensive teaching experience from both the secondary and post-secondary level. He also owns a local business, bringing relevant expertise to the classroom.

Two new part-time faculty members have joined the college’s Nursing & Allied Health division. Michael Freed brings years of professional health care experience to his job of managing the college nursing laboratories. Elizabeth Cordero is a new nursing faculty member who was recruited and brings experience from our local health care industry.

Another longtime part-time instructor, Kevin Burns, will now be working in the area of e-learning instruction, assisting with the transition to a new online instruction format that will offer more capabilities to instructors and students.
