New income opportunities await local farms that can provide consumers with relaxing natural beauty, an affordable family get-away, and an on-farm experience.

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute offers a “Special Events on the Farm” workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the WNC Fallon campus, 160 Campus Way. The event will include a classroom lecture and a site visit to the Lattin Farms Fall Festival, including the corn maze, at 1955 McLean Road in Fallon. Cost is $35 for those registering by October 5, $45 afterward. Lunch is included. Seating is limited, and registration is required.

The workshop includes sessions on business planning, zoning and regulations, insurance requirements, on-farm hazards, marketing and promotion, partnerships and sponsorships, and new ideas for on-farm events. Speakers include industry experts and local farms with a successful history of on-farm events.

Featured speaker Holly George, county director and Livestock/Natural Resource adviser for Plumas and Sierra counties in California, co-authored the book, “Agritourism and Nature Tourism in California.” She has co-chaired the California CE Agriculture and Nature Tourism Workgroup since 1999.

Alexis Hill, former director of Kids & Horses and the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, will lend her expertise on developing sponsorships and partnerships, and marketing on a limited budget.

Several farms will share their successes and challenges with farm events of all sizes, including Corley Ranch, Custom Gardens Organic Farm, and Lattin Farms.

The WNC Specialty Crop Institute is an innovative program that teaches alternative farming methods for local growers. Funding for this project was provided by the Nevada Department of Agriculture and USDA/AMS through the Specialty Crop Block Grant.

Online registration is available at www.wnc.edu/sci. For more information, call 775-351-2551 or email ann.louhela@wnc.edu.
