Pizza Party offers chance to learn about college
Western Nevada College reached out to student veterans this week with a pizza party/information day at the Fallon campus. The free event was Monday, Dec. 3, in the art gallery at Virgil Getto Hall. It was presented by the Veterans Administration to help area veterans learn about services available to them, and to assist them in achieving academic success.
“We collaborate VA services with higher education systems,” said Alison Pratte, a VITAL (Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership) grant initiative social worker. “It provides them with anything they need - care from the VA, anything in school. There are good benefits on many different levels.”
“This was the first event of its kind here,” said Ron Murrujo, Fallon campus manager and counselor. “They heard about some things and services that they haven’t been aware of, and learned more about the college. It also offered the opportunity for veterans to think about taking some classes.”
VITAL hosted a similar event at the Carson City campus in September. The outreach programs were established through funding from the Department of Defense to assist WNC, University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College.
