First Time in Program History
For the first time in program history, the Western Nevada College baseball team will open its season at home. A rainy forecast in Las Vegas has prompted WNC and South Mountain Community College to move their Friday and Saturday doubleheaders to John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.
“I hope to see the faithful at the yard for 50-degree temperatures tomorrow,” said WNC baseball coach D.J. Whittemore.
Doubleheaders are scheduled for 11 a.m. both days.
South Mountain agreed to make a 13-hour bus ride from Phoenix to Carson City so the teams could play their scheduled games, according to Whittemore.
In its previous seven seasons, the earliest that the Wildcats have opened at home is Feb. 18, while the latest date has been March 27.
Whittemore’s Wildcats posted a 48-17 record last season and advanced to the JUCO World Series for a third time. Eighteen of Whittemore’s 27 current players are freshmen.
