WNC Bridge To Success Program
Spring is the season for high school seniors to select their colleges and register for classes, and Western Nevada College counselors and advisors are helping to make that happen for local teens. At WNC, that means Bridge to Success is off and running.
Bridge to Success is a hands-on initiative that brings the college admissions and registration process directly to the student. It reaches high school seniors throughout WNC’s widespread service area. WNC counselors offer multiple information sessions in area high schools to educate students about how to prepare for college.
Team members are WNC faculty, staff and students whose goal is to help future college students with the process, from admissions to financial aid and registering for classes.
“WNC wants to ensure that all high school seniors who want to attend college get the support they need to succeed,” says WNC Fallon Campus Manager Ron Marrujo, who coordinates the program in the Fallon area schools.
Fallon campus Peer Mentor Nilzara Pietri is a student ambassador for the program. She believes Bridge to Success is especially beneficial in the rural communities. “So many kids in the rural areas don’t even think college is an option. I didn’t either, but now that I am getting a degree I can help other rural students see themselves in college as well” she said.
Enrolled students attend meetings with campus staff to complete admissions and financial aid applications, as well as their placement testing. That testing is free to Bridge to Success students.
Marrujo said he hopes more students will take advantage of the assistance. “This program is perfect for students who aren’t sure about a possible major and don’t want to commit to a university just yet, “ he said. “It’s the simplest way to get started at WNC - it’s like having an ‘EASY’ button.”
WNC counselor JW Lazzari believes the program sets students up for success. “Students who complete the program are more prepared for college. They already have a connection to the campus,” he said. “Research shows that students who feel that connection are more likely to succeed.”
