Ready to Take the Stage
Dance floors around town are heating up as contestants for ‘Dancing with the Stars’, Carson City Edition, polish their routines. The event takes place Saturday, March 9, 7 p.m. at the Carson High School gymnasium.
Local stars expected to compete include Sheriff Ken Furlong, District Attorney Neil Rombardo, City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover, City Supervisor/Adele’s co-owner Karen Abowd, Miss Carson City Vannesa Macias, Carson Tahoe Health CEO Ed Epperson and nursing management’s Shelby Hunt, Lake Side Properties owner Kimberly Seifert, Carson High School assistant football coach Kiko Vega, CHS language arts teacher Phillip Brady, Western Nevada College nursing professor Sherry Neil-Urban, and Coldwell Banker agent Garrett Lepire.
The dancers aren’t the only celebrities coming out - Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi is the emcee, and Carson City Mayor Robert “Bob” Crowell and former mayor Marv Teixeira are the event commentators.
The ‘stars’ are teamed up with experienced dancers as they vie for the mirror ball trophy.
After weeks of practice, Abowd, who’s training with dancer Mark Johnson, says she finally feels like the practice is leading to results. “At first it was just learning the steps, but now I’m actually dancing. I just have to stop looking at my feet,” she said. “Now it’s also about shoes and costumes and learning what to do with my arms.”
Sheriff Furlong has had to start training with a new partner, Madeline Ferdman. “She’s killing me,” he joked. “I have pain in muscles I never knew I had,” he said. Furlong’s first dance partner was forced to drop out due to an injury.
General Admission tickets are $10, available at Coldwell Banker, Thurman’s Ranch House, The Purple Avocado and Yaple’s Ballroom and at WNC in the Joe Dini Library and Student Center, room 105A.
Proceeds from the event benefit the WNC Chapter of the National Student Nurses Association.
