Win First Contest 4-1
Western Nevada College split a doubleheader with its College of Southern Nevada rivals in a Scenic West Athletic Conference matchup Friday afternoon in Carson City. WNC grabbed the seven-inning opener, 4-1, before falling short, 5-4, in the nine-inning nightcap. With the split, WNC moves to 7-7 in the SWAC, while the first-place Coyotes are 12-2. The Wildcats are 22-12 overall.
WNC led the entire way in the opener, and freshman pitcher Cody Hamlin went the distance on the mound to earn the win. Hamlin said he wanted to be aggressive, and it showed as he held the Coyotes hitless through four innings. In the finale, WNC held onto to a three-run lead for four innings before the Coyotes wrested it away in the top of the ninth inning.
WNC had four runs on eight hits in the opener, and led the entire game. Conor Harber tripled to centerfield and Joey Crunkleton hit an RBI single for the first score of the game. WNC added a run in the third inning on hits by Tony Roque, Harber, and Crunkleton. The lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth inning, when catcher Cole Ferguson smacked an RBI double to score Crunkleton.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats tallied four runs on 10 hits, while the Coyotes scored five runs on 11 hits. CSN held a 1-0 lead through three innings before the Wildcats grabbed a 4-1 lead in the fourth.
First baseman Connor Klein led off with a solo home run over the right field fence to tie the game, 1-1. AJ Hernandez then walked, and Alex Fife reached on an error. Second baseman Tyler Baker then scored Hernandez on a base hit for a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats added a run on a bunt squeeze, and another on an overthrow.
CSN tacked another run on in the sixth inning off a single and then several wild pitches. The Coyotes tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning, and both teams battled to the end. In the top of the ninth, Southern Nevada’s Chad Whiteaker doubled to right field, and Morgan Stotts followed with an RBI to move the Coyotes ahead, 5-4.
CSN closer Wes Johnson walked leadoff Wildcat batter Matt Becker in the bottom of the ninth, but Harbor followed with a fly out to right field, and Becker was put out on a steal attempt. The final out came in a rundown of pinch runner Donald Glover Jr.
Relief pitcher Austin Richmond took the loss for WNC.
The Nevada ball clubs will meet in another doubleheader Saturday at noon at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.
