Biennial Game at Today, 5 pm - Free Admission
Halfway through the 2013 Nevada Legislative Session, a little levity may be in order. As things heat up inside the legislative chambers, members of the Nevada Assembly and Senate will take it outside on Thursday afternoon and de-stress at the biennial Legislative Softball Game.
For the third time, the event will take place at John L. Harvey Field on the campus of Western Nevada College, in the capital city. The first pitch will be at approximately 5 p.m. Admission is free.
“It’s a time honored tradition,” said Andrew Diss, manager for the Assembly Education Committee, and coach of the Assembly squad. “Some members take it really seriously, but others are just happy to enjoy a hotdog in the dugout,” he said.
This year, all behavior on the field will be closely monitored, as Nevada Supreme Court Justice Michael Cherry will be the honorary umpire.
Jerry Pieretti, who is Sergeant at Arms in the Senate and coach of the Senate team, said the event has been evenly matched in its history. Since the first game was played in 1985, the Senate team has won six and the Assembly has won five, with two that ended in a tie.
But, he said with a smile, “I have the trophy right here,” since the Senate won the contest in 2011.
WNC Softball Coach Leah Wentworth will announce the game.
