As the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball season winds to a close, Western Nevada College gave itself momentum and possibly a better seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Wildcats swept a doubleheader Friday against College of Southern Idaho, 5-3 and 10-8, at John L. Harvey Field.
The victories assure that WNC will be no lower than the third seed in the upcoming conference tournament in Henderson, and leave the door open for a No. 2 seed. The Wildcats will play another doubleheader against CSI on Saturday at noon, in Carson City.
WNC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener with three hits in the first inning, including a leadoff single by Christian Stolo, an RBI double by Connor Klein, and an RBI double by AJ Hernandez. The Wildcats added a run in the second inning when Conor Harber hit a bases loaded RBI, scoring Mike Umscheid, who himself went 3 for 3 with a solo home run in the sixth inning. In all, the Wildcats tallied five hits to three for the Golden Eagles.
In the nightcap, WNC fell behind 4-0. The Wildcats allowed two unearned runs in the second inning, and two more on three hits in the third. WNC got on the board with a solo home run by freshman Spenser Dorsey in the bottom of the inning, but CSI widened the lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning with two runs on three hits.
Then, Umscheid again revved up the offense. He sent his first home run of the year over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Cole Ferguson hit a grand slam to pull the Wildcats out of a 6-1 hole and jumpstart the offense.
The winning pitcher in game one was Cody Hamlin, while McQueen High graduate Christian Stolo made a difference on both ends of the afternoon. He opened the day with a lead-off single in game one, and was the closer in both victories, earning the save in the nightcap.
