Hamlin Earns Pitcher of the Year Honors
Sophomore right-hander Cody Hamlin was recognized as pitcher of the year, and he was among four Western Nevada College baseball players selected to the 2013 All-Region 18 first team.
In addition to the Arizona Wildcat-bound Hamlin, catcher Cole Ferguson, outfielder Conor Harber and pitcher Christian Stolo of WNC were chosen to the first team.
The Wildcats also had three players make the second team and three earn honorable mention. Second-team choices were first baseman Connor Klein, outfielder Joey Crunkilton and pitcher Phil Belding.
Honorable mention went to second baseman AJ Hernandez, third baseman Mike Umscheid and shortstop Tony Roque.
Pitching out of the No. 1 Friday slot for most of the season, Hamlin won 10 games and lost just twice. He walked only 11 hitters in 87 innings and his 1.45 earned run average was the lowest among WNC’s stingy starting pitchers.
Ferguson proved to be one of the Wildcats’ most valuable assets as he repeatedly delivered in the clutch, leading the team with 50 RBI. He finished with a .285 batting average and knocked out 15 doubles. Coach D.J. Whittemore often praised his catcher for his pitch-calling on a team that replaced its entire starting rotation from the previous year and still won the Region 18 title and advanced within one victory of returning to the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.
Harber drove opposing pitchers batty with his ability to find holes in the defense. He hit a school-record .411, the only Wildcat regular to ever hit better than .400. Harber also set a school mark with 11 triples and was second to Ferguson with 42 RBI. He led the Wildcats with 56 runs scored and slugging average (.636).
Although he was only used minimally on the mound, he pitched to a team-low 0.96 ERA in five appearances. He split time between center and right field, throwing out four runners and making three errors in 69 chances.
Stolo, a freshman out of McQueen High School in Reno, started out the season as a pitcher and pinch-hitter but soon became a regular in the Wildcats’ lineup.
The hard-throwing left-hander led the Wildcat starting pitchers with a .176 batting average against and tied for the second-most wins (eight) and was behind only Hamlin with his 1.98 ERA. One of the most consistent WNC hitters throughout the season, Stolo batted .315 with seven doubles, two triples and a home run.
