Students Have the Choice: Attend Class Online or In Person

Flex Classes Increase Access to Education

This fall, Western Nevada College will introduce a new learning format that offers students greater flexibility in their education. The new course type, referred to as a flex class, has an established meeting time, while at the same time it is being broadcast live. Flex classes are face-to-face classes, yet they are also completely available as online classes.

The way in which a student participates in a flex class is an individual decision. A student may choose to attend in person, watch live online or tune in for a recorded lecture at a more convenient time. A student may also opt to alternate between attending online or in person at any point during the semester, and the recorded lectures can be utilized as study tools.

“Flex classes allow our students to choose how they learn, where they learn and when they learn,” said WNC distance education coordinator Clarence Maise. “Students could attend 100% online and never attend an in-person class, yet they have the option of dropping in for an in-person class at any point during the semester. They may start online and decide it is better for them to attend in person, or vice versa.“

“We are increasing the access to education with technology,” Maise added. “The online live and recorded classroom components can be viewed from a smartphone or any computer with an Internet connection.”

There will be at least six flex classes offered during the fall semester, which can be found by searching for classes marked as’ lecture capture’ in the class schedule. They include Bookkeeping I, Financial Accounting, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Strategies for Academic Success, United States History 1865 to Present, and World Religions. Classroom locations for Bookkeeping and Accounting are in Fallon, while the the other four classes will meet at WNC Carson City.
