New Directors at the Helm of Reorganization

College Restructures Academics to Enhance Student Success

Western Nevada College faculty and staff are more focused than ever before on helping students to set and complete their college goals. Whether a student seeks a WNC degree, university transfer credits, a certificate of achievement or an industry certification, college personnel are continually pushing toward student success.

One move that begins this summer is restructuring and compressing the college’s academic divisions. The new structure includes 45 academic disciplines within Liberal Arts, 46 in Career and Technical Education, and Nursing and Allied Division, including registered nursing nursing assistance, emergency medical technician, and venipuncture.

“With a focused administrative presence on campus year-round, this new model will enhance the planning, support and review processes that keep students moving efficiently toward earning degrees,” said Scott Morrison, one of two new division directors.

Morrison, a mathematics professor at WNC since 2006, is stepping into a new role as Director of the Liberal Arts Division.

Sherry Black, who has been at WNC Fallon Campus since 1987 as an academic counselor and then as a professor of education, will be the new Director of Career and Technical Education.

Dr. Judith Cordia, an 11-year veteran of the college, will continue to direct the Division of Nursing and Allied Health.

“Academic departments and leadership have been reorganized in an effort to create greater curriculum synergy and efficiency,” Black said. “In an era of declining state revenues and mounting fiscal challenges, our focus is on strengthening our academic programs and determining the best application of resources to achieve the college's vision.”

Morrison said the new academic structure will offer students more opportunity to meet with division directors.

“While the primary benefits will be realized behind the scenes, students will have more consistent access to division staff and academic support,” he said.
