Having spent most of his adult life in the Midwest, Lee Harrell was looking to step outside his comfort zone and take a chance on a new job in a new location.
That sense of adventure brought him to Western Nevada College as Director of Financial Assistance.
“My wife and I were looking to move, now that our children are grown,” Harrell said. “We’ve only been here a few weeks and we’re already loving it.”
For the past six years, Harrell was assistant vice president for admissions and financial aid at Ohio Wesleyan University. He also served as director of financial services at Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio, and worked at Ohio State University in financial aid.
He received a bachelor’s degree at Armstrong State College in Savannah, Ga., and a master’s degree from OSU.
In the short time that he has been on the job, Harrell said he feels welcomed. “It’s been great. I think everyone has not only been pleasant but very open with their time.”
Harrell takes seriously the role of serving students in their pursuit of higher education. “First and foremost, I enjoy working with students and for students - that’s what we do,” he said. “We’re making sure that we’re administering their financial aid in a proper and effective manner, so we can alleviate the stress and concern for them and they can focus on their academic concerns and responsibilities.”
Outside of the office, Harrell and his wife intend to take advantage of the many outdoor opportunities that the Sierra Region offers. “We’re looking forward to going hiking and camping,” and working on his golf game, he said with a smile.
