Gearing Up for 2014 Season
The Western Nevada College softball team will meet College of the Siskiyous of Weed, Calif., in a doubleheader scrimmage beginning at 1 p.m. Friday at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. It is the only time WNC will play at home during the summer-fall scrimmage season.
“We are really excited to be back at home in front of our home crowd and having the weather we are having now,” Wentworth said. “It’s another JC team in the same situation as us, the getting-to-know phase. It will be interesting to see where we stand against another team.”
Admission is free. Edmonds Sports Complex is located at 1555 Livermore Lane in Carson City.
To date, Mother Nature has made an impact on the team’s summer games. Lightning and heavy rainfall wiped out four of the Wildcats’ eight scrimmages at the TC Thunder Tournament September 6-8 in Tooele, Utah.
“We got away from the snow and found the rain,” quipped Wentworth.
In the Utah scrimmages against the 18U clubs, WNC fared well, winning twice and battling to a tie in another.
The Wildcats opened with an 8-1 victory over TC Thunder, then edged Legacy 3-2. After losing to Vengeance 3-2, the Wildcats tied Chaos, even though slugger Sydney Darby was coming to the plate with the bases loaded when the game was halted due to a time limit.
“It was a really good starting point,” Wentworth said, noting that the club is ahead of where it finished least season. “We were really competitive and were able to move a lot of girls around to see them in different situations offensively and defensively.”
