Wildcats 5K Fundraiser a Success
The finish line wasn’t the only carrot for participants in the second annual WNC Softball 5K Fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 3, in Carson City.
A dinner provided by El Charro Avitia restaurant helped the Western Nevada College softball team attract more runners for its second annual fundraiser. Dinner was included in each participant’s entry fee.
Approximately 100 runners and walkers signed up for the fundraising event, an out and back from El Charro Avitia on a relatively flat and paved course.
“It went really well. We more than doubled what we did last year, which is exciting,” said WNC softball coach Leah Wentworth. “The level of support El Charro gave us by donating dinner helped our numbers grow and made the event nicer.”
WNC debuted with its fundraising run at Edmonds Sports Complex in October of 2012. Besides a change in venue, the generosity of El Charro and a change to an afternoon starting time gave the event some more legs.
“I’m proud of the progress we’ve made so far. We have some good connections with people in the running community,” Wentworth said. “A lot of people from the faculty and staff, student athletes and businesses in the community really rallied around us.”
The team raised nearly $4,000 from the event and will use the proceeds to help defray travel costs as a member of the widespread Scenic West Athletic Conference. The Wildcats’ conference road trips include travel to Salt Lake City; Rangely, Colo; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; St. George, Utah; Henderson, Nev.; and Ephraim, Utah.
