Students Can Vote March 10-14
Western Nevada College students have the opportunity to determine who will represent them in student government during the 2014-15 school year.
Vanessa Cross and Angelo DePerez are candidates vying to become the Associated Students of Western Nevada president, and students can vote for their top candidate March 10-14. Polling stations will be set up in the Bristlecone Building lobby and other locations around the Carson City campus.
Shelly Bale, ASWN adviser, said that she plans to announce the president to the student body on March 25.
"This is our first contested presidential election in quite some time," Bale said.
The new president will represent the student body, coordinate student activities and organizations, and play a key role in advocating for students' needs.
Cross, who is studying for an Associate of Arts degree, wants to create more student involvement on campus.
"I wanted to run for ASWN this year because I want to see our school change for the better," she said. "As it sits now, not many people are involved in the ASWN program. I want to open up the doors and give more students a chance to be involved."
Addressing students' problems and needs is another her goals.
"It seems like a lot of times I hear or talk to students who have things they want to change or fix about the school, but they don’t know where or who to go to with their concerns and requests," Cross said. "I want the students of WNC to be not only seen but heard."
DePerez, who is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts, is focusing his presidential campaign on keeping education affordable for WNC students. As a student representative in the Nevada Legislature, tuition and textbook costs are his concerns. He is also determined to bring a more interactive campus life to students.
"Statistics show that the more opportunities a student has to remain on campus, the more he or she is invested in their studies and in themselves. They earn higher grade-point averages and graduate quicker," he said.
Bale said students who vote are entered into a raffle for a $200 Southwest Airlines gift card, a Kindle Fire, Abababa event tickets, and more. Students are eligible to vote if they are enrolled in at least three credits during the current semester.
