Receive a $25 Gift Card
WNC is looking for graduating students who will help improve the college in the future. Class of 2014 graduates are being sought to complete the Collegiate Learning Assessment. Those who complete the CLA test by April 18 and who have paid their graduation fee will receive a $25 Amazon gift card as a thank you.
Graduating students can make an appointment to take the one-hour, 45-minute assessment by contacting the testing center at 775-445-3335. Exams are proctored in Cedar Building room 331 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.
The CLA challenges students to demonstrate skills in analysis and problem solving, writing effectiveness and mechanics, scientific and quantitative reasoning, critical reading and evaluation, and critiquing an argument. Students will receive confidential test results comparing their scores to those of graduating community college students nationally.
“WNC will use results that compare the graduating students this spring with entering students who took the test last fall to assess strengths and weaknesses across the general education curriculum,” said Cathy Fulkerson, director of Institutional Research at WNC.
Fulkerson said the results also are an asset to students who may wish to use them when applying for a job or to further their education.

National Community College Survey Being Administered on Campus
In addition, 52 current classes have been randomly selected to participate in a separate national assessment, the Community College Survey of Student Engagement, from March 31 through April 25. CCSSE gathers information on student engagement in the college learning experience.
WNC students will be surveyed on how they spend their time, the nature and quality of their interactions with faculty members and peers, and what they have gained from their classes and their college experience.
“It's an important survey that helps drive college priorities,” Fulkerson said. “Several of our 2012-18 Strategic Plan indicators use these results.”
More than 2 million students from 879 colleges have participated in CCSSE testing since 2002. Learn more about the survey at www.ccsse.org.
