WNC Classified Employee Appreciation

Classified Council selects one staff member each month to highlight his or her outstanding contributions to WNC. Anyone from the college can nominate staff for this award. Profiles of the staff members selected are sent to the President's Office and a special celebration is held in the spring to recognize the outstanding achievements of these staff.

Nominate someone

June 2005: Lisa Siembida

Lisa SiembidaLisa brightens a lot of students and staff in financial aid daily. She has a great personality and manages to stay professional during very stressful times. Many times she goes beyond the call of duty helping other employees and students.

April 2005: John March

John MarchJohn March is the mail services supervisor. I have been able to observe his dedication to his job for many years. He deals with the public, customers, peers and administrators in a professional and courteous manner. He has demonstrated an ability to go that extra mile when dealing with a problem that concerns WNCC and its operations. He pursues an issue until reaching an understanding that works for all concerned. John goes out of his way to assist staff in their dealings with him. He makes sure that what we are doing is the best "plan" for both our department and WNCC as a whole. He always has help to offer and smile to give anyone who has dealings with him - which is most of us.

March 2005: Warren Schader

Warren SchaderWarren consistently goes above and beyond what I would expect to find listed in his job duties. His endless patience never ceases to amaze me. Whether it is a software/hardware or operator problem or a user with a question, Warren is always willing to help. Perhaps his most stellar quality, though, is his non-judgmental attitude toward everybody. It doesn't matter if the question has been asked and answered 100 times, Warren is happy to answer it again without making the person feel small. He follows through and doesn't just do what we say we need. He takes the time to get to the bottom of and really understand the problem we are having --- even though we may not know the "right" words to use to explain the situation.

February 2005: Julie Lewis Dewitt

Julie Lewis DewittJulie is a very dedicated employee who will go above and beyond any task asked of her. Her willingness to go that extra mile is shown daily in her desire to help students accomplish their goals while working under heavy deadlines. Julie is an asset to the Admissions and Records department. She is one of the key organizers of WNCC's outstanding graduation ceremony and she is dedicated in organizing and bringing out WNCC's eclectic artists at the Recycled Art Show.

January 2005: Claudia Castillo-Garcia

Claudia Castillo-GarciaClaudia is a tireless worker in our department. She goes the "extra mile" for our students with a smile on her face. Claudia continues to adapt her schedule and duties to fit whatever the Counseling office needs. She is always willing to help the students as well as the Counselors with "other duties as assigned." Claudia does not need supervision and can always be counted on to act professionally and courteously. In addition to her work in the counseling office, she has been active on Classified Council and chaired (co-chaired?) the last classified retreat. She is also a team captain for the "Walk to Las Vegas." We are so lucky to have Claudia at WNCC...and especially in this hectic office. She is wonderful with our students and so deserving of this award.

December 2004: John Hawkins

John HawkinsJohn is an outstanding employee. We have been working together for 4 years, for a newsletter that I was preparing twice a year for the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. His work is outstanding. He is thorough and detail oriented. He is patient. He never complains. He is always "on top of his work." I wanted to invite him for lunch for his long support in this endeavor, and he replied that it was "just part of his job." In my opinion, this newsletter was not regular part of his job, but additional work. I think that John is highly deserving of the honor of outstanding classified employee of the month.

November 2004: Linda Hipol-Rollings (Tie)

Linda Hipol-Rollings (Tie)Although I am not Linda's supervisor, nor do I work in the marketing department, it is clear that Linda's presence at the front desk has streamlined 'front-line' communication. Linda keeps everyone up to date on college activities in the E-News each month - I know that I have mentioned an activity to her in passing, and subsequently found a GREAT write-up in the E-news on the same activity. I have observed Linda directing traffic at the front desk. She is always professional, no matter how chaotic and busy the desk may get. I am assured that students needing assistance are getting it - Linda will find the answer to a question or get the information necessary if she doesn't know it.

November 2004: Walter Lewis (Tie)

Walter Lewis (Tie)I am pleased to nominate Walt Lewis for Classified Employee of the Month. Walt Lewis has developed the interactive video program in Fallon and the rural areas literally from the ground up. He has helped computing services lay cable, crawled through ceiling space, and even fixed equipment on the roof. Walt is completely dedicated to his work and does whatever it takes to fix the problem, whether he has to come in evenings or on weekends. Walt helps out wherever he is needed, getting the job done without fanfare. He keeps the equipment operating, handles video equipment upgrades, and fixes equipment when it breaks down. He also hires, trains, and schedules interactive video facilitators and fills in for them when they are absent. Walt is also in charge of maintaining the interactive equipment at the rural sites. He performs the weekly courier service because he is uniquely aware that weekly contact with the other sites is essential.

October 2004: Rick Morphew

Rick is always there to help rebuild what is crumbling. He is extremely cooperative with faculty and staff. He takes personally every job - he has done a great job in remodeling the Science labs on the Carson Campus. He is also a team player. He cares about WNCC and what role he has to improve the physical setting. Thank you Rick, from many of us faculty and staff members!

September 2004: Ellen Shafer

Ellen ShaferAbove and beyond, she is willing to help anyone with anything! Numerous times Ellen has been deep within a project and someone comes in with a problem, she drops everything to make sure the troubled employee is satisfied and has been helped with the best of her abilities. I think a great big pat on the back is just what is needed to keep her with such a willing and happy to serve attitude. Ellen is responsible for all duties of the classified staff. Some days she has 3-4 people lined up outside of her office waiting to talk to her. Ellen always handles each employee with a professional and courteous attitude. She always goes above and beyond to find the solution that benefits the employee even if it means taking the long way to get there.

July 2004: John Doran

John DoranJohn is a truly dedicated employee here at WNCC. He takes great pride in everything he does here on campus. John is a great leader and displays and incredible work ethic. John has gone great lengths to make this campus look beautiful, keep all the vegetation and landscaping green and healthy, fixes anything he is asked to fix grounds or otherwise. John works tirelessly to make sure his department is on top of things. Of late he and his crew showed not only dedication but courage and steadfastness under fire...literally under fire. During the unfortunate Waterfall Fire John and his crew spent enumerate hours here on campus while most of us watched from town, clearing fire breaks from the Cedar and Aspen buildings and especially away from the Observatory, working along side the fire fighters, all working extremely hard to minimize the potential damage. John and his crew endured tremendous heat, unsafe breathing conditions and at some times danger to make sure the campus was safe and remained unmarred by the fire.
