June 2007: Jack Means
Jack Means is one of those folks who is always there and always willing to help. There are many events that happen at the college at times when regular staff is absent. These events usually go off without a hitch…..because Jack is on duty when they occur! If someone needs extra chairs or tables, Jack is willing; if someone needs a flag moved or a video screen located, Jack is willing. Many often figure that it must be someone else's job…..someone else will make sure the tables and chairs are available; someone else is going to take care of the trash. Jack is many times that "someone else" and everyone really appreciates his over and above effort. In addition, he is always polite and joyful. He is very deserving of this recognition and is definitely an asset to WNC!
Barbara went above and beyond her usual volunteering during this year's Shabby and Chic Flea Market and Craft Fair. Not only did she bring truckloads of wonderful donations from the community, she helped organize the stuff the night before, staying up until 1 a.m. doing last minute things. She then stayed late the following night to make sure everything was OK with the remaining items. On the day of the event, she outdid herself taking money and packing things up. In short, she was outstanding! Kudos to Barbara and more! On the personal side, Barbara is not only a great asset to the college, she is also a great volunteer throughout the community. She helps with her son's boy scout troop, baseball and soccer team organizations, and various fund-raisers. She has been a valuable asset to the WNC community for many years and we look forward to having her for many more.
With the outreach coordinator out of the office for undetermined amount of time, the College Day and Bridge to Success events could have been a recruitment nightmare. Thanks to Christina Hillis for keeping it all together. Christina has been instrumental in keeping the outreach activities coordinated for the college during this time. She has kept everyone informed of changes in the Bridge to Success recruitments, and has adjusted everyone's schedules based on high school needs. She has made sure everyone has the supplies they need for the students and has been the outreach contact for anyone with questions about days, times and staffing needs. This effort goes above and beyond her assigned duties and the college appreciates all her efforts to pitch in, so planned recruitment activities didn't have to be cancelled.
Roberto Ramirez has always been more than willing to help with anything. He is incredibly conscientious about making sure that the evening staff, students and children are well looked after and makes sure to touch base with anyone working at the college on the weekends. Roberto is always cheerful and makes everyone feel at ease. Roberto works the night security shift at the college, and has proven to be the ultimate "safety net" for the night staff at the WNCC Child Development Center. Roberto is kind of like a big brother to everyone at the center in that they always feel safe knowing he's nearby patrolling or just a phone call away if they need help. And whether they need help getting into the business office to drop off paperwork after hours or when they smell gas in the kitchen and need help lighting the pilot light, Roberto is always there lickety-split, ready to help in any way, with a smile in his heart. Thank you Roberto for all you do and all that you are. WNCC appreciates you!
Kevin deserves recognition for the hard work he has done within computing services and all over the college. For instance, his efforts in dealing with daylight savings time projects have been particularly impressive. Many computers around the campus didn't change over like they were supposed to, and Kevin, with his expertise, was right on top of it and got the job done. There have been many other times that various departments have needed computing services and Kevin was right there to "save the day". Kudos to him and all of computing services for their hard work and dedication to make things at WNCC run smoothly.
Lupe consistently provides outstanding assistance to students and staff. She always looks for ways to be helpful to others. During the recent flooding emergency in the counseling offices, Lupe was instrumental in supporting a smooth transition to temporary quarters, in getting the counselors set up with the necessary equipment, and in moving their files to a secure, off-site location. Her help was absolutely critical to the counselors. Everyone who deals with Lupe has never seen her anything but wonderful with anyone needing her help. In short, she is a delight to work with.
Irene Tucker always gives more than 100 percent when doing her job. Western Nevada Community College is lucky that Irene doesn't just stick to her work performance standards. What would everyone at the college do if she did? Success in relationships and achievements of goals are the number one priority for Irene. No matter how busy or how deeply into a project she is, she always makes time to help others. There is a unique quality about her that allows people to feel welcome even under the most drastic situations. Irene Tucker is deserving of this recognition for all that she does which is over and above the call of duty!
Debra Yates has been managing the busy counseling office at Western by herself, with the absence of the office manager, for the past five weeks. During this time, she has managed to successfully serve numerous students, answer phones, proctor exams, score exams, and supervise work study students with a pleasant, helpful, and caring demeanor. In addition, she manages all aspects of placement testing including starting students on exams, scoring exams, and inputting scores to SIS. Debra also orders supplies and equipment for Counseling and Disability Support Services, and submits payroll twice per month for all DSS employees. In addition, Debra assists the DSS coordinator and is working on a database for the department to help manage student information, monitor equipment on loan, and effectively manage the college's growing sign language interpreter needs and note taker demands. She recently completed an introductory Access course to help with pursuit of this project. In short, Debra has a lot on her plate, never complains, and is truly devoted to her job and to WNCC. She has a strong desire to help students and make a difference.
DeVona Scott is an administrative assistant for WNCC Hawthorne. There has been a large turnover in classified employees over the last few years, and many may not know DeVona. This changed with her attendance at the 2006 Classified Conference held in Fallon, where she became acquainted with more of her co-workers. DeVona has worked at the Hawthorne Center for a long time, first under Roselyne Pirodeau as coordinator and currently under Lou Thompson. DeVona is someone you can truly depend on. She submits her petty cash reconciliations every week without fail and never needs to be reminded to do this. She is always concerned about meeting Hawthorne student needs and does her best to provide accurate information and be available for support as required. Most recently, she played a critical role in contacting and collecting vital paperwork from 22 participants in the the Hawthorne Job Prep Program. DeVona's willingness to assist and to do so expeditiously and thoroughly was very important to the program. DeVona "goes the extra mile" for WNCC and its offerings not only in this one-time opportunity but in even her routine tasks and repsponsibilities. It would be appropriate for DeVona to receive the award because her recognition is overdue.
During this past year, Linda Ranieri has gone above and beyond the call of duty in both the business office, and in her new position with the nursing department. Linda took a new job just at year end closing, which is a crucial time for the business office. Rather than just walk out, Linda put in extra hours to help the business office get through this critical time. This was not part of her job duties, but Linda did not even hesitate to help out, even though she was busy learning new tasks in her new job. Also, Linda did not hesitate to "roll up her sleeves" and help pack and move the nursing director's office, as well as her own office, when the nursing department moved to a new location. Linda is always kind, friendly, and helpful to all staff and students and often goes out of her way to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and with kindness. While Linda has only been with WNCC a few short years, she is one of those special employees that make WNCC a pleasure to come to, either as a student or as a co-worker. She is an asset to the college.
Dennis Chapman is the custodian for Pinon Hall at the Fallon campus. He has never received the Employee of the Month award, but probably should. Dennis is a hard worker, coming in at 6 a.m. and leaving at 3 p.m. Above and beyond his normal responsibilities, Dennis is always helpful, trying to accommodate requests with a pleasant manner and in a timely fashion. It is not necessary to ask him to bring copy paper to the work room because he does it proactively when he sees the supply is low. In addition, no one has to ask him twice to do something because it gets done before anyone even notices that it hasn't been done. Except for annual vacation and the very few times he has been sick, Dennis is always at work and available. In addition, he works very well with the rest of the custodial team when it comes to campus projects. Everyone needs a pat on the back once in a while, and his time has come. Thank you Dennis for everything you do.
Elvia Garcia is a pleasure to work with. She is often seen interacting with students, instructors and co-workers. Her professionalism and kindness is constant, even in the face of high stress and even disaster. The ABE/ESL/GED offices in Bristlecone were flooded one night during the summer, destroying most of the program's equipment and furniture. The offices were relocated to Cedar and Elvia, being the trooper that she is, carried on without missing a beat. It must have been difficult to come into work one morning and find every piece of furniture soaked, computers and telephones disconnected, carpet in the process of being ripped out and electronic equipment tangled with cords, plants, files and shelves in the outside hallway. In this challenging set of circumstances, Elvia remained pleasant and professional, efficient and helpful in the midst of all the chaos and that alone is worthy of considerable recognition. She's a dedicated worker and an example of how to maintain composure under extreme pressure.
