2003 Classified Employee of the Month |
Classified Council selects one staff member each month to highlight his or her outstanding contributions to WNC. Anyone from the college can nominate staff for this award. Profiles of the staff members selected are sent to the President's Office and a special celebration is held in the spring to recognize the outstanding achievements of these staff.
| December 2003 - Ginny Dugan |
Since Ginny moved into the same building that my office is in, I have been even more impressed with what an invaluable member of the staff she is. Ginny assists Bus Scharmann in his duties as Dean of the Fallon Campus and Rural Development. Scharmann says, "When I really need something done, I ask Ginny" Ginny's primary responsibility is continuing education, the development of non-credit community education classes. She works closely with private industries to develop customized training programs for WNCC. Because she always goes above and beyond what is expected, Ginny can frequently be found at her desk after hours to make sure she has completed what she wants to accomplish for the day. As Bus notes, "Ginny never says 'no' to anyone."
Ginny's hard work above and beyond her duties have made the Fallon campus a better place to work and attend classes for many years. She definitely deserves to be recognized for her many contributions. |
| November 2003 - Barbara Ford |
Barb continues to amaze me the way she accomplishes research projects in a timely and thorough manner. She has gone out of her way several times in the last few months to assist me on tight deadlines with surveys and reporting that is important to our department. On top of it all, she's friendly without fail! |
| November 2003 - Special Recognition Award |
Fallon Buildings & Grounds
Lanny Vestey, Dennis Chapman, Dave Wooner, and Steve Murray
I would like to nominate the Buildings and Grounds crew at WNCC Fallon, that is, Lanny Vestey, Dennis Chapman, Dave Wooner, and Steve Murray. These custodians have consistently and reliably have always gone above and beyond their job descriptions to provide assistance to the faculty, staff, and students at the Fallon campus. All four custodians work well as a team. This is especially evident when one of them is unavailable due to medical reasons resulting in extended sick leave. When Steve had brain surgery, the other three pitched in to help in Steve's area and ensure that services did not suffer. The same occurred when Dave was absent because of illness and medical testing. If there are special events held at the Fallon campus, whether during the work week or on the weekends, one or more of the custodians are always there to set up and put down as required and in time for the activities.
What is especially admirable is the manner in which they take care of the grounds. We constantly receive comments from the public who come to the campus about the loveliness of our surroundings here at the Fallon campus. The lawns are perfectly groomed and always green in the spring/summer/fall despite the hot weather, the bushes trimmed, the weeds pulled, and the debris picked up. The crew is always willing and cheerful to assist with any request within their realm. |
| October 2003 - Michelle Peltier |
Michelle is one of those person who always works behind the scenes to make sure that the college, college faculty, staff, and students always shine in their best light. Her positive attitude and upbeat personality never fail to contribute to successful performance and outcomes for the college and its various activities. She works well with the public and those who work and attend the college, even when (and especially when) situtations are not going according to the original plan. Whenever I have worked with Michelle she has gone above and beyond what I believe to the be scope of her position. She is untiring in her willingnenss to work with all at the college. I believe that she is deserving of this award for so frequently going the extra mile in her dealings with the college community. |
| September 2003 - Amy Gardarian |
I feel that Amy deserves to be employee of the month for the following reasons. Amy has been employed here at WNCC since January of 1998. She is the Head Teacher here at the Child Development Center for the Dino classroom (3-4 yr old children- 20 of them!). Amy does an outstanding job with the children, and is a positive and uplifting person on a day to day basis. She is always willing to go that extra mile, lend a helping hand, and is one of the most dependable individuals that I've ever had the pleasure of working with. She has incentive to get the job done, and always gives 100% to everyone. I get a "GOOD MORNING" with a bright smile, EVERY SINGLE DAY from Amy. The children love her and we, here at the CDC love her! Amy always attends staff meetings, fund raising events, and even headed up a very successful fund raiser here, just a few months ago, leading to a $300 per classroom expenditure for toys & other supplies for the children and teachers. Amy has donated sick leave hours to those in need (catastrophic leave), since Amy very, very rarely calls in sick, she has built up a nice accrual of hours! I can not think of anyone who deserves this award more! So, I ask that you please consider my nomination of Ms. Amy Gardarian as employee of the month (if not employee of the year)! |
| August 2003 - Artis Briggs |
Artis in a member of the Buildings and Grounds Janitorial Night Crew. In essence, she is one of the people you never see, but your office areas indicate she has been there.
Computing Services recently had the opportunity to interact with Artis. We (Don, Tonie and Song) had to work late (until 1:00 A.M.) on a Friday night installing new servers. We did not take any breaks for dinner. Artis saw us working and went to Albertsons and bought us chicken with her own funds and made sure we took a break to eat...her thoughtfulness to other staff members, and her ability to look beyond her own job and acknowledge another departments efforts makes her and OUTSTANDING CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE. |
| July 2003 - Linda Jacobsen |
Linda Jacobsen works for the Child Development Center. I have been able to observe her dedication to her job in this assignment. She deals with the parents, teachers and children in her care in a professional, caring, and courteous manner.
She has demonstrated an ability to go that extra mile when dealing with a problem that concerns the CDC staff and/or the children in its care.
She always has help to offer and a smile to give anyone who enters her office. I believe she goes above and beyond the duties as written in her work performance standards and is an asset to WNCC and the Child Development Center. |
| June 2003 - Ray Sprinkle |
I am nominating Ray for EOM because of his many contributions to students and faculty on the Fallon campus. Ray is a very efficient and helpful person who makes using audio-visual aids easy for the faculty. Ray also maintains the equipment to ensure that everything is in working order. If something does not work properly, Ray deals with the problem immediately.
In addition to his work responsibilities in the Beck Library, Ray takes classes at WNCC and is seeking an A.A. degree. Furthermore, he has almost completed the requirements for the Florida State Financial Planning Certificate, which will make him a Certified Financial Planner. Ray also volunteers many hours tutoring students in geology, geography and accounting. |
| May 2003 - Sue Wiklankski |
I would like to nominate Sue Wiklanski for MS. June 2003. Sue has worked at the Carson Campus for over 20 years in Student Services and Academics.
Each Monday I came back and asked how things went, and she said Sue jumped right in and answered phones and made sure she got breaks, which was a huge relief for me. She took on the job that never ends for us, she processes the applications for admissions, which is the biggest help she could do for us. She started coming out of the office and socializing more and offered to help in any way. I was worried when Sue transferred in because I didn't know if she would like working with us because she was so quiet. Now I know she was absorbing the many duties and angles Admissions deals with.
Sue will be retiring in the next year or two and I don't know if she has ever been the employee of the month, and I want Council to know she truly deserves the honor. She is part of the college team and we send her to all the social functions to represent Admissions. She always cooks an awesome home made dish for all the potlucks, where Julie and I run to Albertsons because we are obviously not as organized as her. She is knowledgeable, has that superwoman instinct to jump in and save the day, she rarely goes to lunch, and when she does, she asks if going out for a change is okay with Julie and I. Julie and I have a lot of respect for her, she's been at WNCC a long time, seen a lot of changes, had good times, had some bad times, but through all she has been through, she still comes in 15 minutes early, makes sure Julie and I have back up, and has a good time. She never lets the politics annoy her. We now count our blessings that she ended up in admissions during the hiring freeze, because we have had other employees come in part time and try to change every policy and procedure in place without knowing the history. She knows the history and plays on the team, not against the team. If Sue were to leave tomorrow our ship would sink. Every employee in Admissions goes above and beyond, but Sue keeps the mother's eye on to catch us when we fall. |
| April 2003 - Jose Martinez |
Walks on water.
Always upbeat and helpful.
A needed translator and is always willing.
1.7 years at WNCC |
| March 2003 - Judy Pierce |
Since 10/2001 when Judy Pierce transferred from Carson City to Douglas, she has been the most consistent office person we have. Often she stays on campus during her breaks and is available to students and staff. Judy has been doing the bulletin board by herself and it is beautiful. She helps senior citizens enroll and is very patient on the phone. Judy did much of the work on the centerpieces for the classified retreat. She has spent her own money making monthly events at Douglas a success. Gail and Judy started these events in September to increase exposure on the weekends since FTE dropped 8% in one year. She is currently making flowers for the Valentine's Day event. During January's first week of classes, she stayed with a staff member's child during a family emergency. The operation of Douglas has significantly improved since Judy transferred here. She IS A STAFF MEMBER who puts in the extra time to benefit the campus. |
| February 2003 - Jack Piirainen |
I would like to nominate Jack Piirainen as Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month. Jack has been so great during our "time of crisis." When we received the threatening telephone calls, Jack took charge of the situation. He was always available to advise us, direct us, calm our nerves, and he (seemed) never to go home! Jack worked long hours to ensure the safety of our staff and students….and he never complained! I believe Jack Piirainen is very deserving of this award. |
| January 2003 - Darla Dodge |
Darla Dodge has worked in both the Child Development Center and in Dane's office. I have been able to observe her dedication to her job in both of these assignments. She deals with the public, customers, peers and administrators in a professional and courteous manner. She has demonstrated an ability to go that extra mile when dealing with a problem that concerns WNCC and its operations. She pursues an issue until reaching an understanding that works for all concerned. She is a self-starter and not a clock watcher. She always has help to offer and smile to give anyone who enters her offices. I believe that she goes above and beyond the duties as written in her work performance standards and is an asset to WNCC. |
