WNC Stories and Testimonials Vanessa Adrian |
 | | Vanessa Adrian | NO FEAR - Preparing to Protect and Serve As part of her training in the Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy, Vanessa Adrian has been tasered, bruised by a shotgun, and pepper sprayed in the eyes. And she loves every minute of it.
Ask her fellow officers, and they'll say they are impressed by how the 5-foot-4-inch, 120-pound young woman can throw people around. "Defensive tactics are my favorite part of the training," Adrian said. "We use pain compliance, as well as verbal judo."
With the training she has received at WNC, Adrian thinks she will be ready for any situation she faces as a police officer. "I don't ever feel intimidated because I have the right training," she said. "I thought I was a strong person going into the POST academy. I'm even stronger now, and more cautious and alert."
The instructors at Western cover all the bases in the academy and make safety the No. 1 priority, according to Adrian. "They know what they're talking about because they have been in the field and have already gone through everything. They give information from experience and not just from a textbook."
Being a female in a male-dominated field doesn't bother Adrian and she knocks her fellow cadets down like she would anyone else. "They have become a brotherhood to me and a second family," she said. "We look after each other. It helps that I have a female commander (WNC POST Coordinator Katie Durbin) as a role model, too."
Adrian, who was born and raised in Carson City, will continue her education at the University of Nevada, Reno after she graduates from Western and eventually hopes to be a parole officer. She is currently employed with the Storey County Sheriff's Office.
