WNC Stories and Testimonials Ciera Staggs |
 | | Ciera Staggs | Personal Touch Makes College a Reality Last year this time, Ciera Staggs wasn't sure just where she would be headed after graduation from Yerington High School. That's when Western Nevada College stepped in and helped her make the right choice. College officials met with her individually during a visit to Yerington High, helped her with the application process, and then registered her for classes.
Staggs was vice president of her high school class and president of the honor society. But like many other graduating seniors, she didn't yet have a clear plan for her future. The visit by WNC changed that.
"Everything really fell into place," she said. "Leaving my family was tough but when someone puts it in front of you, it makes the decision a lot easier. It's the best thing I have ever done and a big turning point in my life. I am the first person in my family to go to college "
Staggs maintains a 3.8 grade point average at Western and was recently accepted into the college's rigorous registered nursing program. There, the students have banded together in a "learning community" where they study together and motivate one another. "Everyone in the program really encourages each other. It's exciting, but sort of scary," she said. "It's a big commitment and takes a lot of my time. My life is pretty much all school, all day."
College is a lot different than high school, according to Staggs, but she has found the smaller classes and caring instructors are similar to what she experienced at Yerington High School. "The teachers are really helpful and encouraging at WNC and they keep your spirits high."
Staggs is not sure where her future will lead, but she would like to complete her bachelor's degree in teaching some day. "You never know where life is going to take you," she said. "You just have to take it one day at a time."
