Turnitin Resources

What is your submitted work compared against? How does Turnitin know if your work has already been published?

As incredible as it might sound, Turnitin currently has over 4.5 Billion (yes, that's a "B", folks) pages of the Internet either live or archived. And, that total is growing every day.

Turnitin also has access to millions of published works from the ProQuest databases and the entire Gutenberg Collection of literary classics.

One of the most valuable Turnitin resources is the every growing database of papers that have been submitted to Turnitin for screening. A copy of every paper submitted to Turnitin is retained and used as a comparison document for new papers. The paper database is protected by the latest in server security technology. That eliminates any copyright issues that might be involved.

For more information on how Turnitin protects your information please read the "Copyright and Privacy" brochure. Note: Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the document.

How Turnitin Works

So, how does Turnitin work? Here's the process:

  1. You submit a paper electronically via an assignment that has been created inside a class by the instructor.
  2. Turnitin compares the contents of the submission with the papers in the Turnitin database.
  3. Areas of similarity are marked and referenced in an Originality Report and the document and the report are placed in the instructor's inbox.
  4. The instructor reviews the report and reviews the paper. The instructor makes a case by case decision as to whether or not a paper rises to the level of plagiarism and assigns a grade to the paper.
  5. The paper is returned to your inbox and the grade is automatically recorded in your Turnitin GradeBook..
