A goal is a broad statement of purpose, aim or intention. As individuals begin their educational goals at Western Nevada College, they need to ask themselves the following kinds of questions:
Why am I here?
What do I want from WNC?
What do I want from further education in general?
What do I want to accomplish in the next few years to make my college experience worthwhile?
What are the things that I am willing to do or not to do to meed the educational goals I set?- Making Decisions
- Decisions are reached by making choices from the available opportunities. Decision-making involves giving up some things in hopes of getting other things that are considered more important or valuable. Decisions are to be of their very own personal nature. Many individuals find decision making difficult and stressful because htey view decisions as permanent and they do not want to eliminate any options. Also, they fear that they will make the "wrong decision".
- On-going Decision Making
- Decisions simply point individuals in a certain direction. In the on-going process of life, individuals will have hte opportunity to see the results of a decision, then evaluate, adjust or even replace it with a new decision. A decision is only a best judgement at a particular point in time and circumstance. Perhaps more important than making the "right" decision is the need to make some decisions and set some goals, as tentative as they may be.
- Goals are Powerful
- Goals reward individuals for their efforts by giving their activities meaning and by providing them with the all important motivation to do well in those activities. The significant areas in which individuals need to make specific decisions about the educational goals are:
career
certificate
degree
transfer
major
course requirements - Career
- My choices of career will to a large extent, dictate the kind of certificate, degree, transfer program, major and courses I will need to complete.
What career would best match my interestes, values, skills, and experience? - Certificate/Degree/Transfer
- Does my chosen career field require a college education and/or technical training experience?
Will attaining an occupational certificate suffice?
Will I need an associate degree?
Will I need to transfer to a four-year college or university for a bachelor, graudate or professional degree? - Course requirements
- What courses are required in order to complete my educational goal?
How prepared am I to handle the requirements of the classes?
Do I have the necessary preparatory skills in English, reading, and/or mathematics?
In addition to the required courses, what other classes would be useful in my career prepartion or general education? - Plan your schedule
- Refer to the time management section before filling out your semester time schedule. Mark off the days and hours already committed to work and other obligations. Then, note the remaining time available for your educational goal. Keep in mind the study time and work formulas outlined in the time management section when selecting the number of classes you take.
