Financial Assistance

Money for College: Scholarships

New for 2008: Apply for Scholarships

You may apply for scholarships in two ways:

WNC Scholarships
Each year, WNC awards scholarships to students on the basis of academic criteria and/or any combination of academics, field of study, financial need, activities, community service, etc. Students who complete the necessary financial assistance documents will also submit a WNC Scholarship Application that will be used in consideration of WNC scholarships. Students who are not eligible for federal assistance can still apply for scholarship funds. The initial fall scholarship application deadline is April 1 and the spring scholarship deadline is December 1. Students must complete the scholarship application to be considered for a WNC scholarship.

Generally, a student may apply for campus based scholarships if he or she:

  1. meets the specific selection criteria for a particular scholarship program
  2. is enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits, unless otherwise requested by the donor.
  3. has a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0, unless otherwise requested by the donor.
  4. has financial need as determined by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a requirement for many scholarships.

Students awarded scholarships will have their award disbursed to their student account, once a thank you card has been received. Please be aware:

Scholarships of $500 and over will be disbursed in two equal payments (fall and spring), unless otherwise requested by the donor. Students must meet the minimum criteria that are stated in the specific scholarship in order to receive the second disbursement.

Millennium Scholarships - In 1999, Gov. Kenny Guinn's Millennium Scholarship initiative was enacted into law by the Nevada Legislature. Each Millennium Scholarship is worth up to $10,000.

A student attending WNC and using his or her Millennium Scholarship must enroll in a minimum of six eligible credits and will receive a maximum of $40 per credit hour. This scholarship is for up to 12 credits of 100 level and above courses per semester. Contact the Office of the State Treasurer to request complete information and all eligibility criteria http://nevadatreasurer.gov/millennium/.

Tribal Scholarships - For those who are Native American, your tribe or nation may offer college scholarships. To learn more, contact your tribe, call the regional office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Sacramento at (916) 978-6058 or go to www.oiep.bia.edu. Many tribes and the BIA require a "needs analysis" from your college's financial aid office to document eligibility, so be sure to file your FAFSA early.

Community & Private Organization Scholarships - Students are encouraged to contact their high school, clubs, civic groups, churches, or organizations for possible scholarship consideration. (Some examples would include: Rotary or Soroptimist clubs, etc.).

Other Scholarship Opportunities - There are hundreds of thousands of scholarship opportunities that an ambitious student can discover. While your local library will contain many scholarship directories in the reference section, the best way to match your particular characteristics to scholarship opportunities is to search through the Internet. Students may use computers in WNC's library for this purpose. Several free online scholarship searches are available. WNC recommends:

Be sure to begin your scholarship search early!
