April Cockerham DREAM Act Scholarship

The DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) was first introduced in 2001 to benefit foreign aliens and their children seeking new lives and new opportunities in the United States. Although the act has not been passed by Congress, and despite resistance from many legislative and judicial bodies, executive action from President Obama enacting key portions of the DREAM Act represents progress for immigrants everywhere.

There is still much to be done, however, before immigrants can enjoy the full benefits of a clear path to U.S. citizenship, and many individuals will strive tirelessly in social, political, and legal arenas in order to achieve the necessary reforms. It takes a special kind of person to advocate for justice - a person who is willing to champion equal rights at the expense of certain privileges and exclusive beliefs held by many individuals and groups in our country. Now, more than ever, the individuals who desire to make a measurable difference in the area of immigration reform must be well educated, highly motivated, and have a hands-on understanding of the issues and policies in the U.S. and around the world.

The April Cockerham DREAM Act scholarship is designed to support individuals who are interested in making a difference in the lives of immigrants and other non-native individuals living in the United States. By furthering the educational goals of these unique members of our nation, Ms. Cockerham looks to invest in a richer, more inclusive future for our country and those who seek to join it.

April Cockerham is proud to offer this $500 scholarship to students pursuing any level of post-secondary education who submit materials in accordance with the following guidelines.

Eligibility

  • The April Cockerham DREAM Act Scholarship is open to any student enrolled in a community college, private or public undergraduate college or university, graduate program, business school, or law school in the United States.
  • All candidates who apply for this scholarship must be in good academic standing and possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Application Requirements

The scholarship candidate must submit a 700-word essay or statement that considers current immigration conditions and reforms in the United States and offers at least twoconcrete ways that these conditions might be improved.

  • The scholarship candidate must submit a professional resumé listing past academic, professional, and volunteer experience.
  • The scholarship candidate must submit a current official transcript from his or her school. First-year college students, graduate students, or individuals who have recently transferred between schools may submit an unofficial transcript from their current institution, as well as their most recent official transcript from a prior school.

The winner of the April Cockerham DREAM Act Scholarship will be announced in June of 2016.

              • Proof of attendance or acceptance at a certified school.
              • Proof of a minimum 3.0 GPA from the school you currently attend or most recently attended (copy of official transcript is sufficient).

Candidates must submit an original essay based on the following:

Imagine that you are 80 years old and you are only now planning your will. What would you want your legacy to be? Write a letter from your ideal future self to your current self, explaining what you will accomplish over the next 10 years, how you will accomplish it, and what the continuing impact of those accomplishments will be after you are gone.

Submissions will be evaluated based on thoughtfulness, as evidenced by the originality of your goals, the level of consideration given to how you will accomplish them, and how realistic they appear to be. Don't assume that a general desire to save the world or cure cancer is more impressive than a plan to provide for a certain family member if the plan to provide for the family member has clearly been carefully thought through and can realistically be achieved.

There is no minimum or maximum length requirement, but we expect that the winning essay will fall somewhere between 750 and 1,500 words.

                  Multiple Scholarships for Minority Students

Minority students have an expansive selection of financial aid available to them, but finding and applying for those opportunities isn't always easy. Read on to learn how to begin creating your financial aid strategy.

Students of color and other minority groups have long been underrepresented in higher education. In an effort to change that and to increase overall access to postsecondary education, numerous organizations, associations, and companies are dedicated to supporting the academic endeavors of all minority students. Navigating this financial aid landscape, however, can sometimes be overwhelming, particularly for those who may be the first in their family to attend college. To help minority students achieve their goals, AC Online created the following guide on financial aid. Students and their families can explore the different types of financial assistance available; learn where to find and access scholarship money; get tips and recommendations from a financial aid expert; and find a list of various resources for support and additional information on paying for higher education.

                      Stroble Law Bi-Yearly College Scholarship

Helping students meet their financial needs

The Michigan personal injury law firm of Stroble Law is happy to announce that it will be awarding a $500 bi-yearly scholarship to a student who is planning to attend a college or university during the 2015-2016 academic year. As an attorney who attended Michigan State University for both his undergraduate studies and for law school, founding partner Thomas L. Stroble understands the value of higher education. He also understands that the ever-rising costs of a quality college or university education make it more and more difficult for many families and students to pursue their dreams of obtaining a degree. As a result, his law firm has decided to offer its first-ever scholarship essay competition to help students pay for the costs associated with obtaining an education.

In order to participate in the competition, an applicant must either be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university or be planning to enroll for the fall 2015 semester. In order to apply, applicants must write a 500-word essay on the following topic: .

According to a study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), texting while driving doubled the risk of a crash or near-crash event and resulted in drivers taking their eyes off of the road for an average of 23 seconds. In response to these risks, many states have taken steps to limit or even prohibit the use of handheld devices, such as cellphone, while driving. These measures have been met with varying degrees of success. What types of legal penalties would you believe would effectively deter drivers from texting?.

Essays will be judged on the quality of the writing and the potential the applicant demonstrates for success in a field of study related to law. UCHE $1,000 College Scholarship Essay Contest

As an attorney, Chicago criminal defense lawyer Nenye Uche understands the value of higher education. In order to become a licensed attorney in Illinois and most other states, a person is required to have an undergraduate degree as well as a Juris Doctorate, which normally requires at least 7 years of post-high school education. In addition to this significant investment of time and effort, obtaining a post-secondary education also often requires a significant investment of financial resources as well. College tuition rates have skyrocketed over the past few decades, putting a significant financial strain on many college students and their families. In an effort to help students meet their financial needs, Mr. Uche’s law firm is offering a $1,000 annual scholarship to an incoming or current college student. Information about applying for this scholarship is provided below.

                        Scholarship essay contest and topic

The scholarship will be awarded to the winner of an essay contest. In order to apply, applicants should write a 500-word essay on the following topic:

The past few years have seen several states take a much more tolerant approach towards marijuana regulation. Notably, Colorado and Washington State have gone so far as to legalize the recreational use of the drug for people over 21. Illinois legalized medical marijuana last year, and there is currently pending legislation that would decriminalize marijuana possession and another bill that would fully legalize marijuana for individuals over 21. One of the major concerns raised by marijuana critics is that legalized pot would increase the incidence of impaired driving. Do you believe that legalizing marijuana would result in more impaired drivers, and, if so, what steps could lawmakers take to discourage people from driving after using marijuana?

The essays should be submitted as an attachment in either Microsoft Word Document or Adobe PDF format to nenyeuchescholarship@gmail.com by August 14th, 2015. The submissions will be judged based on the following criteria:

                        • The substantive quality of the response
                        • The quality of the writing
                        • Originality
                        • Demonstrated understanding of the topic
                        • The applicant’s demonstrated potential for success in a field related to law

Mr. Uche will personally review the submissions and notify the winner by email on or around August 14th, 2015.
