April Cockerham DREAM Act Scholarship

The DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) was first introduced in 2001 to benefit foreign aliens and their children seeking new lives and new opportunities in the United States. Although the act has not been passed by Congress, and despite resistance from many legislative and judicial bodies, executive action from President Obama enacting key portions of the DREAM Act represents progress for immigrants everywhere.

There is still much to be done, however, before immigrants can enjoy the full benefits of a clear path to U.S. citizenship, and many individuals will strive tirelessly in social, political, and legal arenas in order to achieve the necessary reforms. It takes a special kind of person to advocate for justice - a person who is willing to champion equal rights at the expense of certain privileges and exclusive beliefs held by many individuals and groups in our country. Now, more than ever, the individuals who desire to make a measurable difference in the area of immigration reform must be well educated, highly motivated, and have a hands-on understanding of the issues and policies in the U.S. and around the world.

The April Cockerham DREAM Act scholarship is designed to support individuals who are interested in making a difference in the lives of immigrants and other non-native individuals living in the United States. By furthering the educational goals of these unique members of our nation, Ms. Cockerham looks to invest in a richer, more inclusive future for our country and those who seek to join it.

April Cockerham is proud to offer this $500 scholarship to students pursuing any level of post-secondary education who submit materials in accordance with the following guidelines.

Eligibility

  • The April Cockerham DREAM Act Scholarship is open to any student enrolled in a community college, private or public undergraduate college or university, graduate program, business school, or law school in the United States.
  • All candidates who apply for this scholarship must be in good academic standing and possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Application Requirements

The scholarship candidate must submit a 700-word essay or statement that considers current immigration conditions and reforms in the United States and offers at least twoconcrete ways that these conditions might be improved.

  • The scholarship candidate must submit a professional resumé listing past academic, professional, and volunteer experience.
  • The scholarship candidate must submit a current official transcript from his or her school. First-year college students, graduate students, or individuals who have recently transferred between schools may submit an unofficial transcript from their current institution, as well as their most recent official transcript from a prior school.

But our associates know that not every battle is fought in the courtroom. Fighting a disease requires more than a legal "Strong Arm" - it requires a dedicated team of medical staff, loved ones and countless more. Fighting leukemia requires determination, drive and diligence in both the patient and the patient's loved ones. Often, the battle is a solitary one, isolating the patient and family. Our firm associates recognize this. That's why we are delighted to introduce the first-ever John Foy & Associates "Strong Arm" Leukemia Scholarship in time to honor Leukemia month in September. Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens, and it’s one of the most diagnosed in adults. A phenomenal amount of medical research has been successful in raising the survival rate in children from 10% in the 1970s to more than 80% today. If you or someone you love have been affected by this disease, you have already been in the fight of your life. Now you have a chance to attend college and move in a positive direction, by educating yourself to secure a brighter future. As attorneys, we appreciate the intrinsic value of a college, not just as a formal education but also as a way to advance your life. Let us help you help yourself.

The John Foy & Associates "Strong Arm" Leukemia Scholarship is open to high-achieving college students who meet this criteria:

      • You or a loved one have been affected by leukemia.
      • You are enrolled in an accredited college or university as an undergraduate or you are an incoming freshman at an accredited institution in the United States.

To apply, you must write a 500 to 1000 word essay on one of the three topics listed below and submit an official high school or college transcript. You may only apply online at this website.

The McKenzie Law Firm Legacy Planning Scholarship

The McKenzie Law firm is pleased to announce our first scholarship award for students who seek to further their educational goals. Education costs have risen over the years and often the burden to pay these costs are too high for students alone. As an estate planning lawyer Dan McKenzie has seen what can happen when individuals do not plan ahead. The McKenzie firm has found that planning for these costs often comes from advanced future planning on the part of the students' parents. The Legacy Planning Scholarship seeks to bring awareness to students about advanced financial planning and fiscal responsibility.

      Eligibility Requirements

      • Student must be enrolled in a post High School Education
      • Preference will be given to Veterans

      Application Process

      • Only emailed submissions will be considered.
      • Only Word or PDF attachments will be opened.
      • Proof of attendance or acceptance at a certified school.
      • Proof of a minimum 3.0 GPA from the school you currently attend or most recently attended (copy of official transcript is sufficient).

Candidates must submit an original essay based on the following:

Imagine that you are 80 years old and you are only now planning your will. What would you want your legacy to be? Write a letter from your ideal future self to your current self, explaining what you will accomplish over the next 10 years, how you will accomplish it, and what the continuing impact of those accomplishments will be after you are gone.

Submissions will be evaluated based on thoughtfulness, as evidenced by the originality of your goals, the level of consideration given to how you will accomplish them, and how realistic they appear to be. Don't assume that a general desire to save the world or cure cancer is more impressive than a plan to provide for a certain family member if the plan to provide for the family member has clearly been carefully thought through and can realistically be achieved.

There is no minimum or maximum length requirement, but we expect that the winning essay will fall somewhere between 750 and 1,500 words.

      Scholarship Award: $1,000

The Legacy Planning Scholarship will be awarded to a student based on his or her application

      Deadline:

      • All Applications must be received by email on or before November 29th, 2015.

        Essay Topic

Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer diagnosed in close to 3,000 Americans each year. The only established cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Most victims were unwittingly exposed to asbestos at work or while serving in the military. Still others developed mesothelioma through exposure from family members coming home from work with their clothes covered in asbestos fibers.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the annual number of mesothelioma deaths is increasing. According to experts, over 20 million people in the United States are at risk of developing malignant mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure.

We believe it is important to get the facts out about mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, and especially, to help educate young Americans by researching and writing about one of the below topics:

        • New topics to be decided for next content

        Essay Length

The essay must be no fewer than 750 and no more than 1,500 words long.

        Judging

        • Essays will be judged by Jennifer Gelsick, former caregiver for her father, Don Smitley, who passed away from mesothelioma in October 2013, and Lisa Hyde-Barrett, a thoracic surgery nurse.
        • Submissions will be judged on content, correctness of facts, grammar, style, and originality.
        • Judges will look for clear, original essays that are logically organized and well-supported.

        Selection Process

Due to the popularity of social media and the ability to reach a wide number of people to educate them about mesothelioma, this year’s contest will include a public voting aspect. The judges will select the top 4 essays through the criteria listed above. The top four finalists will then have an opportunity to use social media to help determine their final placement.

A page will be created on MesotheliomaHelp.org for the essays. A link to the essays will be provided to the finalists when they are notified of their placement.

The top four winners will be notified on the dates found on the sidebar on the right and will have three weeks to garner votes for their essays and to request citations (links) from other academic sources. Finalists should encourage their friends and families to read their essays through sharing on Facebook, Google+ or via Twitter postings. A specific #hashtag will be used to track the activity.

The winners will be determined by a combination of the number of votes for their essays and for the number of citations (links) from other academic works. Note that links are weighted more heavily than votes and each citation counts as 100 votes. Please note that we reserve the right to exclude any websites from the final tally that we deem inappropriate or irrelevant.

Please refer to the FAQs for examples of appropriate and inappropriate citations. At conclusion of the voting period, the top five finalists will be selected and notified.

        Winner Notification

        • The top four finalists, as selected by the judges and will be notified via email
        • Winners will be announced to the public

Navigating this financial aid landscape, however, can sometimes be overwhelming, particularly for those who may be the first in their family to attend college. To help minority students achieve their goals, AC Online created the following guide on financial aid. Students and their families can explore the different types of financial assistance available; learn where to find and access scholarship money; get tips and recommendations from a financial aid expert; and find a list of various resources for support and additional information on paying for higher education.
