Western Nevada College welcomes Major League Baseball's Matt "The Bat" Williams back to Northern Nevada for the 10th Annual Wildcats Athletics Gala. The annual not-to-be-missed event on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, will celebrate the adventures and entertainment opportunities that make Northern Nevada such a great place to live and play! Williams is a 1983 graduate of Carson High School who became one of baseball’s premier players. The third baseman and right-handed batter played for the San Francisco Giants, the Cleveland Indians, and the Arizona Diamondbacks during his 17-year major league playing career. He is now a coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Due to the kindness and continuing generosity of businesses and individuals in our area, WNC has benefitted from more than $200,000 in support of Wildcats Student Athletics over the past several years. This program has been largely funded by local donors, and is a testament to the generosity of our community. Because of you, we have two successful athletics programs that enrich our college and community!
The primary purpose of WNC's intercollegiate athletics program is to promote an increase in student access and student success. The proceeds from the 2013 Wildcats Athletics Gala will be used for travel, operations and scholarships for our softball and baseball programs. In 2012, WNC's baseball and softball teams were each named Academic All-American Teams by the National Junior College Athletics Association. It honors teams that win at least half of their games while attaining at least a 3.0 GPA average. The baseball team, which earned a spot in the National Junior College World Series for the third time in seven years, was the only competitor that also earned Academic All-American Team honors!
Our programs are an integral part of the WNC and local community that contributes to economic development and a positive lifestyle. We hope you will join us in our mission to raise funds for these very important programs.
