Western Nevada College wrapped up its most successful fall softball season ever by beating 2014 California Community College Athletic Association state champion Sierra College.
After the two clubs battled to an 8-8 tie in the opening game of a doubleheader on November3 in Rocklin, Calif., the Wildcats won the second game, 9-5.
WNC concluded its fall scrimmage season with nine wins, one defeat and two ties. The Wildcats’ lone loss was a 7-6 setback to the University of Nevada, Reno.
“I’m happy where we are, and we have a really good chance of being competitive in this conference,†said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “What I’ve seen this fall is this team looks like a CSI team and this team looks like a Salt Lake team.â€
In the opener against Sierra, Melanie Mecham pounded out three hits in four at-bats and scored a run to lead the Wildcats’ 10-hit attack.
Pitchers Kristina George and McKell Marble limited Sierra to four hits. A pair of homers kept Sierra in the game, and a two-out error by WNC in the seventh inning allowed the tying run to cross the plate.
Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Jimmy shut down Sierra’s offense in the second game. Jimmy tossed a two-hitter, and all five Sierra runs were unearned. She struck out three and walked three in her complete-game outing.
“Kaitlyn is trusting her stuff,†Wentworth said. “She’s always had velocity but would fall behind in the count. Now she is working ahead, enabling her to utilize her other pitches.â€
The Wildcats’ offense produced 21 hits against the perennial California postseason qualifier, with outfielder Triniece Lesky, Briauna Carter and Noa Talia each totaling three hits. Mecham, Gabrielle Canibeyaz, Kacie Freudenberger and Courtnee Higgs provided two hits apiece.
“We are hitting consistently and getting a lot of rallies going,†Wentworth said. “What I’ve been most impressed about is that our baserunning has stepped up to another level. They are looking for extra bases, stretching singles into doubles and doubles into triples.â€
The Wildcats will open their 2016 regular season on Jan. 29 in the College of Southern Nevada Kickoff Classic. For more information about WNC’s softball team, go to http://wildcats.wnc.edu/index.aspx?path=softball.
