It is my privilege to announce the recipient of the 2014 Western Nevada College President’s team award. For this year, the award goes to the Jump Start implementation team.
The team members that were nominated were Scott Morrison, Chelsie Hamtak, Jaime Aust, Troy Wadsworth, Lupe Ramirez, Deb Case, Anne Hansen, Coral Lopez and Peggy Stutsman.
Special recognition also goes out to John Kinkella who spearheaded the program with the school districts in our service area. For those in the college community that don’t know what “Jump Start†is, it is a dual track program that allows Juniors and Seniors from local high schools to take classes at WNC and receive credit toward both their high school graduation as well as fully transferrable college classes.
Dual Tracking is nationally recognized as a best practice and has been proven to both increase college participation rates, as well as reduce the time it takes participants to obtain college degrees and certificates.
A year ago, Jump Start was just a concept and now it is a fully operating program with nearly 200 FTE students signed up to take classes beginning next fall. Participating high schools include: Carson City, Douglas, Dayton, Virginia City, Fernley, Silver Stage, Yerington, Smith Valley, Whittell and Churchill County. The team spent untold hours meeting with the schools, students, parents and district administrators to get the program up and running.
This program is an example of an entrepreneurial spirit that will allow WNC to weather the budget issues that have burdened the college over the last several years and allow us to grow and better serve the students in our service area.
Also nominated for awards were the application support and development team which supported Jump Start and will fundamentally change reporting and access to data. The Fallon Campus team was also nominated for growing enrollment on the Fallon Campus at a time when overall enrollment for the college was down as well as their service to our students in Fallon. Both of these teams are also to be commended for their efforts.
Please join me in congratulating the Jump Start team as well as the other nominees for their service to our students and the communities we serve and for making Western a better place to both learn and work…well done!
Chet Burton, President
