Students, faculty and staff at Western Nevada College are saddened by the sudden loss of Nevada Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson over the weekend. Assemblyman Thompson, chair of the Assembly Education Committee, was an advocate for education at all levels, including higher education, and recently was working with WNC on several access and success initiatives for our students.
Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Thom Reilly commented on the passing of Assemblyman Thompson on Saturday:
“He was a selfless advocate for Nevada’s public higher education system and most especially our students,” Reilly said. “Tyrone was a tremendous leader and a friend. We are shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. On behalf of the Board of Regents, the Nevada System of Higher Education and our eight institutions, I want to express our sympathies to Tyrone’s family. This is a tremendous loss.”
A candlelight vigil will be held on the Legislative Steps Tuesday, May 7 at 8 p.m.
Viewing Services will be Friday, May 17 from 2:30-6:30, at Victory Baptist Church in Las Vegas, and the Homegoing Service is Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. also at Victory Baptist Church.
