Performing Arts at Western Nevada College offers a general range of classes, both online and face-to-face. Students can take classes in piano in the college Clavinova laboratory where each student learns on their own piano, which communicates with the teacher control center. They can also study Music Appreciation, The History of Rock Music, The History of American Musical Theatre, Songwriting, Music Technology, Acting, or Theatre Technology, as well as group instruction in guitar or private lessons in voice, guitar and multiple orchestral instruments. Several styles of dance are offered off campus.
Their flagship program is The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company, possibly the largest regional theatre company in Northern Nevada. Aspiring students mix with seasoned professionals to create stunning, critically-acclaimed productions that draw as many as 7,200 people from across the United States: recent analyses of ticket data have shown that audiences come to the productions from 20 states and Canada.
Each course offered in the performing arts is a University transfer and fulfills the fine arts core requirement. While the primary mission of a performing arts program is to provide depth to the educational experience, several of our students have gone on to careers in the entertainment industry, ranging from talent agents and casting directors to educators to Broadway performers. Several of our recent Jump Start graduates have received scholarships to musical theatre conservatories in New York.
